#repost @nytimes A female great white #shark inspecting a piece of hanging bait near a dive cage. The photographer @benlowy spent a few days #divingwithsharks in Isla Guadalupe, Mexico, which has become one of the world’s top destinations for those hoping to dive with the oft-maligned and misunderstood creatures. Instead of tempting the sharks with bloody carcasses on fishing lines, tours embrace an eco-tourism approach, allowing sharks to inspect and interact with food floating in the water. On @benlowy’s first couple of trips #underwater, he said, few sharks came to visit. But on the 3rd day (by which point the photographer was less nervous) there were plenty of sharks. To take this photo, @benlowy had to lean out of his cage — which looked like the one pictured in the background — so that his torso and camera were out in the open water. The water magnifies the shark, he said, but they were still fairly close to one another. Follow @nytimestravel and @benlowy to see more #underwater photos.
